My favorite things
As we close out this year and look into the next, there will be a lot of people voicing their top 10 picks in various areas from 2017. When it comes to art, music and movies, I find these lists pretty dumb. Any 10 movies that would make it on that sort of list are all probably good enough that ranking them is useless.
With that in mind, I’m going to list “things.” Doesn’t matter where they come from or what they are, these are my 10 favorite “things” from this year of our lord, 2017. Please note that this list is scientific, so it’s objectively accurate and irrefutable.
5. Great Lakes Christmas Ale – Usually this would probably be higher in the ranking, but it seems like they changed the recipe or something. It’s still pretty good, and extremely dangerous when imbibing, but it’s slipping. I assume Great Lakes Brewing Company reads everything I write, so I just thought I’d let them know.
4. Nintendo Switch – Hey, the Mario people made a new video game thing! And it’s really cool! By making a console that can effortlessly switch (haha) between a TV screen and a handheld mode, they also made every parent’s nightmare: a console a kid literally has no excuse not to be playing at all times.
3. Tim Horton’s – I honestly don’t know if it’s only our Tim Hortons here in Marysville, but 2017 has really made me appreciate this Canadian chain. While calling itself a “bake shop” is a bit of a stretch, it has pretty good coffee and sandwiches, and their food has gotten me through many mornings. I don’t really have anything funny to say, I just like it.
2. My new apartment – I moved recently, and let me tell you about my new place. It’s very small. The oven is electric, which means I have to deep clean it on a weekly basis. My bedroom is very drafty and usually a couple degrees below the rest of the apartment. Which is weird because, again, it’s a pretty small apartment. My garbage disposal is perpetually clogged. And with all those things in mind, I love the place.
1. My Cat, Snowball – I have a new cat. Her name is Snowball. She’s still a kitten, so she can transform briefly into an unmitigated nightmare for a few minutes, then turn back. When I sleep, she tries digging her way under my covers. But she’s also extremely affectionate for a cat, and she is mine.
