Evelyn Echo Southwick Baker Hanno, 91, of Byhalia, died at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at Whetstone Care Center in Columbus, surrounded by her family.
She worked at Jolliff Grocery in Byhalia for many years while raising her sons, Thomas and Tim, with her first husband, Edwin Baker. She was named the “longest living in service clerk” for Washington Township, where she served for 30 years.
A lifetime resident of Union County, she graduated from Byhalia High School and never missed the annual alumni dinner. She received the “Who’s Who” award in Ohio in 1974, “citizen of the week” award in June, 1989 and the “Salute to Leaders” award from the Union County Chamber of Commerce in 2006.
A fascination of antique furniture and jewelry led her to establishing her own business, “Echo’s Art & Antiques.” She became an expert in the field and her opinion was often sought by many people in Central Ohio. She was an avid fan of The Ohio State University (OSU) football team and was often heard saying, “I wish football season would start.”
The football season was only second to her love of time spent with her family. She enjoyed the many annual family trips to the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and her multiple visits to Sanibel Island, Venice Beach and Naples. She enjoyed many outings with her second husband, Ralph Hanno, and his family. She was a compassionate person who only counted the golden hours while taking the time to smell the roses.
She was born Oct. 3, 1926, at her home in Richwood, to the late Lawrence Southwick and Glenna (Wood) Southwick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edwin Baker, and her second husband, Ralph Hanno.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Tammy) Baker and Tim (Ken Naponiello) Baker; stepchildren, Susie Hanno, Kathy Nicholson, Tom (Peach) Hanno and Sally (Joe) Powers; grandchildren, Kristen Baker, Josh Baker, Carley Baker, Jamie (Scott) Beale, Jessica (Stephen) Rode, Laura (Jay) Harper, Nicholas Rhodes and Meredith Baker; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Byhalia Cemetery, in Byhalia. Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Mount Victory is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Byhalia-York Alumni Association, in care of Janet Markin, 72 George St., Richwood, OH 43344.
