Jonas J. “Dick” Schlabach, 82, of Plain City, died Monday evening, Nov. 6, 2017, at Altercare of Hilliard, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born and raised on a farm, where he began working when he was 8 years old. The farm is where he developed his dedicated and strong work ethic. He retired from Ranco after 33 years as a shipping foreman and began working with his daughter and son-in-law at Hochstetler Buildings. He then increased his hours with Perry’s True Value Hardware Store, where he worked until the day before he went to the hospital.
He enjoyed nature and being outdoors, along with fishing, bird watching and caring for his yard. He also enjoyed watching The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a dedicated member of the Sharon Mennonite Church and his church family was important to him. Most of all, he loved and adored his family.
He was born on Oct. 24, 1935, in Fredericksburg, to the late John N. and MaryAnn (Slabaugh) Schlabach. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary (Miller) Schlabach; sister, Sarah Miller; brother, Levi “Lee” Schlabach; and brother-in-law, Eugene D. Miller.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Marjorie (Yoder) Schlabach, whom he married on June 23, 1957; loving daughters, Debra (Glenn) Hochstetler, Marilyn Schlabach, Carol (Don) Schleich and Joan Schlabach; grandchildren, Jeffrey Hochstetler, Jenna Hochstetler, Daniel Caruso II, Megan (Nick) Morosco, Allyson Schleich and Troy Schleich; great-grandsons, Harrison and Theodore Morosco; sister-in-law, Ada Schlabach; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Sharon Mennonite Church, 7675 Amity Pike, Plain City, where Pastor Robert Yoder will officiate funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will take place at Sharon Mennonite Cemetery.
