Lloyd J. McDowell, 94, of Marysville, died peacefully Tuesday evening, April 10, 2018, at Bluebird Retirement Community after many months of failing health, surrounded by his loving family.
A man of faith, he was a lifetime member of Springdale Baptist Church and served as a church trustee. A veteran of the United States Army, he was drafted and based in Korea from 1945 through 1946, during and after World War II. A graduate of New Dover High School, he was a lifelong farmer in Dover Township who served as the township’s trustee for 24 years.
Dedicated to his community, he was also a lifetime member of the Marysville FFA Alumni and a Farm Bureau council member, director for the Ostrander Farmer’s Exchange, board member and director of Champaign Landmark, member of Leesburg-Grange and an ASCS committeeman.
In his later years, he spent a great deal of time restoring Model A cars and trucks, as well as collecting antique farm tools. He was a man with a great sense of humor and he enjoyed telling funny stories and jokes to anyone who would listen. He also enjoyed wintering in Florida for more than 30 years with his beloved wife, Marjorie.
He was born June 15, 1923, in Union County to the late Jesse and Verna Crider McDowell.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, the former Marjorie Rittenhouse, whom he married March 23, 1947, at Springdale Baptist Church, by the Rev. George Reed; children, Gary (Sallie) McDowell, Linda (Dennis) Hamilton and Marcia (Barry) Moffett, all of Marysville; grandchildren, Angela Birchfield, Brian McDowell, Erica (Daniel) Karcher, Michelle (Jeff) Krofft, Shaun (Tammy) Hamilton and Shari (Jason) Anderson; and great-grandchildren, Drake Birchfield, Keira McDowell, Riley Karcher, McKenzie Karcher, Zack Hamilton, Claire Hamilton and Viola Bybee.
Calling hours will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ingram Funeral Home. The Rev. Rorke Warne will officiate funeral services at noon Friday at the funeral home. Friends may also call Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. Burial will follow at Mount Herman Cemetery, where the Union County Honor Guard will provide full military honors.
In his memory, contributions may be made to Springdale Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
