The No. 16-seeded Lady Monarchs of Marysville remained alive in the Division I soccer tournament on Thursday.
MHS (6-7-4) defeated No. 19 Delaware Hayes, 3-1, in the sectional finals.
The Lady Pacers took an early 1-0 lead when they slipped the ball past Marysville’s backline and the keeper early in the opening half.
The Lady Monarchs quickly responded after Sarah O’Neil played Caitlin Cotner on the outside.
That gave Cotner the opportunity to get the equalizer and tie the contest at 1-1.
Maddi Shumway scored the go-ahead goal later in the half. She beat the back two Pacer defenders and placed the ball past the keeper on an unassisted breakaway.
Marysville took a 2-1 lead at the turn and scored an insurance goal just minutes into the second half.
Jenna Rioch broke through the back line and ripped a perfectly-placed ball that deflected off Hayes’ keeper.
Abby Jacobs took control of the ball and sealed the deal with the final goal.
The Lady Monarchs will travel to No. 4 Dublin Jerome Tuesday, 7 p.m., to play in the district semifinals.
