Larry Zimmerman, Marysville Exempted Village Schools superintendent, has been selected to serve on the Buckeye Association of School Administrators/Ohio Department of Education School Finance Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to serve as the main communication link with the assistant superintendent of public instruction for finance and accountability at the Ohio Department of Education. The committee is a critical link to the Ohio Department of Education regarding school funding and school finance issues, according to a press release announcing Zimmerman’s selection. It is comprised of practicing school superintendents from across the 10 BASA regions of the state and several Ohio Department of Education personnel, including the assistant state superintendent. Last year the committee discussed numerous topics related to school finance, such as the budget cuts made at the Ohio Department of Education that impacted revenues to the public school districts; the governor’s school reform suggestions and financial implications; compensation for school districts for revenue lost due to tax exemptions; the Ohio School Facilities Commission segmentation projects and efficiency in collecting and reporting financial data. “This is an opportunity to participate in discussions and work toward solutions for school funding in Ohio,” Zimmerman said in the press release. “Ohio School funding has been unconstitutional for over 10 years and there needs to be some finalization to help solve the issue. Right now school funding is falling too much on local property tax in communities and that is just not fair. This along with the state mandated reduction factor which allows little or no tax money growth forces far too many local school levies in school districts all over Ohio. Education and the future for all kids are far too important for funding issues to become as divisive and emotional as they have become in communities. Something has to change at the state level to develop fair and consistent educational funding throughout Ohio.” Zimmerman will serve a two-year appointment on the committee which meets quarterly in Columbus at the BASA offices.
