By J-T staff reports

On Friday at noon, an Ohio Historical Marker commemorating Charles W. Fairbanks will be dedicated on “The Green” in Unionville Center.
Guest speakers will include Denver Thompson, Unionville Center mayor; Pastor Kelley Schanely, Unionville Center United Methodist Church; Roger Davenport, Darby Township trustee; Kaylee Walk, Fairbanks Local Schools; Bob Parrott, Union County Historical Society; and J. D. Britton, Ohio Historical Society.
A reception will follow. The public is invited to attend.
Charles Warren Fairbanks was born in a log cabin near this location in Darby Township on May 11, 1852, to Loriston and Mary Adelaide Fairbanks. The cabin was replaced by a two-story frame house where he was raised to adulthood.
Fairbanks married Cornelia Cole in Marysville in 1874 and they moved to Indianapolis, where he pursued legal and political careers. Cornelia died on Oct. 24, 1913, followed by Charles on June 4, 1918. Both were laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Fairbanks became a prominent lawyer and nationally known political leader. He was the keynote speaker at the Republican Convention in 1896, United States Senator from 1897 to 1905, vice president of the United States from 1905 to 1909 during the Theodore Roosevelt administration, and vice-presidential candidate in 1916.
Fairbanks, Alaska, and Fairbanks Local School District, Milford Center, are named in his honor.
Administered by the Ohio Historical Society, the Historical Markers program enables Ohioans to commemorate and celebrate local history and to learn more about the state. Designed to be permanent and highly visible, the historic markers are large cast aluminum signs that tell stories about aspects of Ohio’s history. The Historical Marker Committee of the Union County Chamber of Commerce plans to dedicate four historical markers per year over the next five years.
The marker was funded by the Union County Historical Society, Darby Township trustees and members of Unionville Center Village Council.
May is an appropriate time to dedicate the marker in honor of National Preservation Month and the day before the sixth annual Charles W. Fairbanks Festival slated for Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on The Green in Unionville Center. The festival will include all types of activities and food for families.
