Memorial Day events slated countywide May 22, 2009 at 6:22 am
Editor’s note: The following is a summary of Memorial Day activities in the Union County area. Details about Marysville’s holiday activities appeared in Wednesday’s Journal-Tribune. ––– Those who wish to participate in the Jerome Township Memorial Day service should assemble at Jerome United Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m. The parade will proceed to Jerome Cemetery at 10 a.m. and will be led by a law enforcement officer. The parade also will feature the Dublin High School, Dublin Coffman or Dublin Jerome band. It also will feature Jerome Township Fire Department vehicles. The Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial in the center of the cemetery. The ceremony will include the National Anthem and flag raising, children laying flowers at the base of the flag pole, Boy’s and Girl’s State representatives reading excerpts from their applications, a 21-gun salute and taps. ––– Memorial Day events in the village of Milford Center are planned for Sunday, May 24. Line up for the Memorial Day parade will begin at 1 p.m. at the Union Township Fire Department, 47 Railroad St. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m., and as part of the event, ceremonies are scheduled to be held at the bridge and the cemetery. ––– American Legion Post 258 is planning two parades and two Memorial Day services at North Lewisburg and Woodstock. At 8:30 a.m., the Woodstock Parade will form on Burnwell Street beside the Woodstock Community Church. At 9 a.m., it will proceed west on West Bennett Street to the Woodstock Cemetery, where a service will be held at 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., the North Lewisburg Parade will form on West Townsend Street in front of Carter’s Garage. At 10:30 a.m., it will proceed east on Route 245 through the business section to South Gregory Street, to be followed by an 11 a.m. service at Maple Grove Cemetery. The Triad High School Band will play, and Lt. Col. Ronald Henry, U.S. Air Force, active duty, from Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, will be guest speaker. ––– Memorial Day activities in Plain City will center around a pair of parades in the village. The VFW parade will step off from the elementary school at 9 a.m. The parade will travel east to Chillicothe Street, then turn south, stopping at the cemetery and the bridge for brief ceremonies before arriving at Forest Grove Cemetery between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for the village Memorial Day service. The baseball parade will begin at 11:30 a.m., leaving the south entrance of Pastime Park, proceeding to Main Street, east on Main then North on Chillicothe and to the park's north entrance. ––– Richwood’s Memorial Day activities will begin Monday at 9 a.m. at York Cemetery. The Richwood Parade through downtown Richwood will begin at 10 a.m. Ceremonies will be held at Claibourne Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and Price Cemetery, near Essex, at 11:30 a.m. Those who are attending only a cemetery event should arrive 15 minutes early. Scout troops, military vehicles and any other groups may march in the 10 a.m. patriotic parade. Reservations are not required, and anyone wanting to participate should arrive at the former Mills Chevrolet building on North Franklin Street no later than 9:45 a.m. to get in line. Richwood American Legion Post 40 and VFW Post 870 request that the public spend a few minutes along the parade route and/or at a cemetery ceremony to support local veterans by honoring military members who honorably served our country.
