Tips offered for winter fire safety

When considering winter fire safety, one must first consider heating related fires. Heating related fires are the second leading cause of all residential fires (behind cooking fires), and the leading cause of home fires during the months of December, January, and February.
More than one-fourth of residential building heating fires result from improper maintenance of heating equipment, specifically the failure to clean the equipment.
Heating devices can be put into three broad categories: Kerosene heaters, wood stoves/fireplaces and furnace heating. Many of these fires can be prevented.
