A total of 104 votes separated the city of Marysville from an additional $4.1 million a year.
Marysville Mayor Chris Schmenk said it was a close race, but a disappointing loss.
Ultimately, voters rejected raising the city income tax from 1.0 to 1.5 percent. The increase would have funded police, fire and municipal court services into the future. A resident earning $50,000 per year would have paid an additional $250 annually, or about $21 a month.
A total of 2,750 people voted against the issue, with 2,646 approving, a difference of 50.96 percent of the votes to 49.04.
Schmenk said the rejection at the polls requires the city to take a new look at its financial situation.
