The man at the center of a 17-year lie to state and federal officials has been sentenced to probation
John R. Knasel, 45, of 3877 Bulle Road, Sidney, pleaded guilty in September to one count of tampering with records, a third-degree felony, in connection to a plot that allowed a woman to take and raise a baby that was not hers.
Thursday, Knasel learned that he will not go to prison, but instead will be subject to three years of probation. Knasel faced as many as five years in the penitentiary. If Knasel violates the terms of his probation, he faces a year in prison.
Assistant Union County Prosecutor Rick Roger said the man participated in “the perpetuation of a lie.” Roger also reminded Common Pleas Court Judge Don Fraser about “a disturbing relationship” with his oldest daughter, an adult.
Defense attorney Perry Parsons said Knasel did not benefit financially from the lie. Parsons said his client is not like most clients. He said Knasel has been cooperative and is now caring for his 7-year-old daughter.
