Richwood to slam door on cat problem July 22, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Humane Society receives grant to trap, neuter stray felines The Union County Humane Society (UCHS) received a $14,010 grant from PetSmart Charities this week to spay and neuter feral and stray cats in Richwood. The money will fund the purchase of live traps and monitoring software to spay/neuter 303 feral and stray cats in a Trap-Neuter-Release Program in the village. UCHS is a private nonprofit organization that has been spaying/neutering feral and stray cats in partnership with The Black and Orange Cat Foundation since 2007. UCHS opened its low-cost services to the public in 2009, successfully sterilizing more than 400 cats per year to proactively fight the county’s dire feral/stray cat overpopulation problem. “Cats can have three to four litters per year, with an average of four to six kittens per litter, and the kittens can begin having litters within a year as well,” said UCHS Executive Director Steffen Baldwin. “We are very pleased to offer this opportunity to the village of Richwood. While UCHS offers spay/neuter services for feral and stray cats at a reduced rate that only covers costs, ($25 for a feral neuter and $40 a feral spay) there are many people who are unable to pay that low cost when it is multiplied by a colony of 20 to 30 cats. This grant will allow us to reach out and really make an impact in Richwood.”
