Megan Lahman, daughter of James and Rebecca Lahman of Marysville, is a member of Bel Canto at Bluffton University for the 2009-2010 academic year. Bel Canto is a women’s chorus that performs choral music on campus for special events and concerts. Lahman is a first-year student at Bluffton majoring in pre-med and biology. Bluffton University was founded in 1899 and is affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA. It is located in northwest Ohio. ––– Kent State University conferred degrees to spring graduates during commencement exercises Aug. 29 and 30 in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center on the Kent Campus. The university awarded 79 associate degrees, 602 bachelor’s degrees and 450 graduate degrees to students. Emily Peters, Marysville, received a bachelor of science degree from the college of communication and information. ––– The University of Toledo has named Lyndsay Rush to the college of engineering dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester. To be named to the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher while taking at least 12 hours of course work. ––– The following area residents were awarded degrees during the summer commencement at The University of Akron: Austin Bingman, master of music, and Jamie Smith, bachelor of science in business administration, finance, both of Marysville. Rhonda Tipple, Ostrander, master of science in nursing. ––– Drew Lykins, Marysville, is a member of Lipscomb University’s 2009-2010 freshman class. Lykins, a Marysville High School graduate, is one of 605 freshmen enrolled at the Nashville, Tenn., university. ––– Stephanie Zbacnik of Marysville, was named to the academic honors list at Owens Community College during the summer semester. To be eligible, students must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Owens Community College is a fully accredited institution of higher education serving Northwest Ohio. ––– The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund recently announced that Marysville resident Grace Cooper has been awarded a college scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. She is a sophomore at Columbus State Community College where she is majoring in fine arts. This scholarship is given to the sons and daughters of military heroes who have been killed, classified as a Prisoner of War (POW), Missing in Action (MIA) or permanently disabled as the result of an operational mission or training accident. Cooper’s father, Seaman David Cooper of the United States Navy, was classified 100 percent permanently disabled as a result of a service connected incident. He was awarded a number of medals and commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Grace Cooper is a trainer at Marysville Digital Academy. She is active with her church, having gone on a number of mission trips. The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $3 to the sons and daughters of military heroes. ––– Jeffrey A. DeWitt of Marysville was awarded a master of business administration with the completion of the summer quarter at Baker College Center for Graduate Studies. ––– Collin Sobas, son of Patrick Sobas and Maria “Kim” Sobas of Marysville, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima to begin classes in the June session. He will major in the diesel/agricultural equipment program. Collin attends Marysville High School.
