Two grants, one issued in 2008 and extended again in 2009, and another issued in 2009 have helped Marysville Schools make a difference in fuel usage and the effect of school buses on the environment.
Ongoing attention by the board of education to careful financial stewardship encouraged school officials to apply for the 2008 Ohio Department of Development’s grant for use of alternative fuels for school buses and the 2009 Ohio EPA’s Clean Diesel School Bus Fuel Retrofit Grant. The district earned both grants, exceeding $51,000 in transportation related subsidies.
Marysville School Board vice president, Scott Johnson said that the $25,000 for the B20 Biodiesel School Bus Grant Program compensated the district for using a new 20 percent soy diesel blended fuel instead of the previously used low sulfur road diesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel reduces particulate matter, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. Biodiesel emissions also reduce potential cancer-causing compounds by 80 to 90 percent, according to a press release announcing the grants.
