The Monarchs beat Marion Harding, 39-6. –––– It’s hard to imagine that a lesson learned early in the 2008 football season paid dividends in the Marysville football team’s 2009 season opener. But the realization that energy is a finite commodity helped Marysville explode out of the gate following a long lightning delay en route to a 39-6 pasting of Marion Harding Friday night - though the final gun did not sound until just after midnight, technically making it a Saturday finish. Against Groveport in 2008, the Monarchs saw a long weather-related delay. In that contest MHS coach Jeff Gafford told his charges to take off their pads and relax, knowing that if his squad stayed keyed up for an extended period of time, it could suffer a let down out of the gate. The tactic worked and the Monarchs outlasted a talented Cruiser squad, 25-20. Friday night lightning forced Marysville’s game to be delayed before it ever began. And the storm was sustained, leaving officials with no choice but to make a final decision on the game at 9 p.m.
