Somewhere in the vast celestial regions of Heaven, there is a football coach with a huge smile on his face.
What had to have put that smile on Frank Spurlock’s face up in the sky was the way his former team, the Fairbanks Panthers, won on Friday night.
During the late Spurlock’s 20-year reign as the founder of Panther football, FHS teams were known for their ground attack.
The Panthers’ 28-10 victory over neighboring rival Triad brought back memories of those golden days of the 1970s and 1980s.
The current day Panthers, much like their forefathers, mounted an impressive infantry attack against the Cardinals, grinding out 365 rushing yards and tallying a scoring drive in each quarter.
“We did what we do really well tonight,” said FHS coach Morgan Cotter. “We were able to out-physical them up front and that allowed Tyler Smith to have a big day.”
Smith amassed 258 yards on 30 carries. Many times, his efforts up the middle rocked the Cardinals for critical yards when the Panthers needed them.
