The eight-team bracket tournament is named in honor of the very successful former Elgin coach, who retired prior to the 2008 season. Hopewell-Loudon justified its number one seed, defeating the host school in the championship match. Fairbanks, which was seeded sixth, came within a handful of points of reaching the title game, losing 25-16, 17-25, 21-25 to third-seeded Elgin in the opening round. The Lady Panthers were nothing short of impressive in the opening game, led by Grace Burrell and Lyndsey DeRoads at the net and the serving of Korah Morris and Sarah Jacobs. With Jacobs on the line, kills by DeRoads and Burrell turned a tenuous 8-7 lead into a 12-7 advantage. A kill by Burrell later doubled the score at 24-12 and a slam by DeRoads put the final point on the board in the Panthers’ victory. Alder places fifth Jonathan Alder also competed in the Elgin Classic. The Lady Pioneers finished fifth with a 25-19, 25-14 sweep over Fredericktown. JA opened the day with a two-game victory over Benjamin Logan, before losing 19-25, 22-25 to Hopewell Loudon.
