Wildcats remain unbeaten; FHS tops Upper Scioto Valley October 05, 2009 at 8:35 am

Gilead. –––– North Union exploded for 21 points in both quarters of the first half, then rested its starters in the second half at Mt. Gilead on Friday. The Wildcat defense pitched its second consecutive shutout and remained unbeaten after a 56-0 blanking of the Indians. Travis Laird scored three touchdowns in the first half and Blake Taylor made good on eight-of-eight extra point kicks in the victory. Clay Hastings tallied two rushing TDs and Warren Shields, Derrick Neel and Brandon Mercer each found the end zone once. The Wildcat offense churned out 418 yards of total offense and the defense came up with five takeaways. Chad Laird, Ethan Blevins, Jon Widby and Hastings each intercepted a Mt. Gilead pass and Josh Smith recovered an Indian fumble. Leading 42-0 at the half, NU coach Jesse Miller turned the game over to his second units after one defensive possession of the second half. They responded by preserving the shutout and adding a pair of scores in the third quarter.
