There were really no surprises Friday night when the Fairbanks Panthers hosted Fostoria St. Wendelin for the rainy 2009 Homecoming game. The contest matched arguably the best team in the Northwest Central Conference against a circuit newcomer that has struggled to put enough healthy players on the field at any given time. It’s no secret the Panthers (5-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference) like to run the ball and they did that, rushing for 403 yards through poor Wendelin tackling during a 54-7 victory. “We came out and did what we wanted to do, which was set the tempo in the first quarter,” said FHS coach Morgan Cotter. Fairbanks was on a steady beat from the opening possession which lasted all of two plays. Max Burnside covered most of the 65 yards FHS needed to reach the end zone on the second snap of the game. Taking the handoff from quarterback Mitch Rausch, the slippery Burnside was like greased lightning in romping for a 54-yard score. Ryan Rausch’s extra point culminated the first scoring and it was only the beginning for the Panthers.
