Marysville was unable to hold the momentum of a solid first quarter, eventually falling 33-17 to Dublin Scioto on a blustery night at Monarch Stadium.
Marysville raced out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and was still battling late in the half, trailing 13-10. The Monarchs, though, took an unexpected haymaker and were never able to recover.
The Monarchs were driving into Irish territory with less than a minute left in the second quarter. Fullback Nate Weeks had just picked up a first down at the Scioto 30 and the Monarchs had a couple of tries to get into the end zone or at least field goal range.
But MHS QB Luke Fleming dropped back to pass and was sacked and big Grant Pleasant was there to scoop up the ball. The 6’3, 230 defensive lineman wasn’t lightning fast, but he was just fast enough to outrun the MHS pursuers and his TD and subsequent PAT gave Dublin a 10-point cushion from which the Monarchs never recovered.
Scioto quarterback Charlie Suich was a weapon from the shotgun. He ran for 213 yards and three scores and passed for another touchdown. Suich was so quick and elusive and carried out his fakes so well that he drew a handful of Monarchs his direction even when he didn’t have the ball.
