When championships are on the line, the team that executes the best will generally walk away with the crown.
Unfortunately for the fans of the Fairbanks Panthers, it was the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers who did the best job in that category on Friday.
As a result, the Tigers left Kyre Field with a 25-14 victory and the outright Northwest Central Conference title.
In doing so, Waynesfield snapped FHS’ two-year conference championship run.
The tone for the contest was set early when the Tigers took advantage of a Panther miscue.
FHS was held to just two yards during the first three plays of the game.
The Panthers went back into punt formation but the snap from center went over punter Austin Clarridge’s head.
Clarridge covered the ball at the FHS 37, surrendering possession to the Tigers.
Waynesfield needed just four plays to score the game’s first touchdown.
After loosening the Panthers with three running plays that netted 29 yards, Tiger quarterback Connor Mortimer flipped a screen pass to Nate Brassell that covered the rest of the way into the end zone.
The extra point failed, leaving the Tigers up 6-0.
By taking advantage of that FHS miscue, Waynesfield did what the home team couldn’t do.
Fairbanks had to punt after its next series and although Clarridge got off a good kick, the Tigers once again hit paydirt.
Waynesfield needed just two plays to cover 67 yards, the final 64 coming on a run by Ryan Spencer.
