The Pioneers won, 21-10, to earn their ninth straight state playoff berth. –––– With less than a minute to play Friday and the visiting St. Charles team driving inside the red zone, the Jonathan Alder Pioneers were holding onto their playoff lives by a thin four points. On second-and-eight from the Pioneer 19 and trailing 14-10, St. Charles quarterback Shane Bauman floated a pass to the short flat. Pioneer defensive back Justin Ault stepped in front of the offering at the 16-yard-line. 84 yards later, Ault was in the end zone and the Pioneers were in the playoffs with a 21-10 win. “I saw the ball,” said Ault. “I knew they were going to pass to that guy. They had been throwing to him all game and they were trying to catch us off guard. I just saw the ball and it fell right into my arms. It wasn’t a spectacular play. It felt like I was in a video game.” Ault said he looked back only once. “I only saw two guys and I took off running again,” said the senior cornerback. “I knew no one was catching me.” Graham Johnston sealed the victory over the Division II opponent one play later, again intercepting Bauman, this time at the Cardinal 44 with 24 seconds to play.
