The Lady Panthers fell, 38-31. –––– There was no question as to what type of defensive strategy Columbus Bishop Hartley would use against Fairbanks’ girls basketball team Monday evening. The Hawks’ instructions from coach Mike Lanza were pretty simple ... do everything you can to stop Panther sharpshooter Lyndsey DeRoads. They then went out and pretty much accomplished what they wanted during a 38-31 victory. Hartley employed a diamond⁄box-and-one defense that made DeRoads work extremely hard for the nine points she scored. “We’ve got to be prepared for that,” said Panther coach Rob Riddle. “We didn’t execute the way we need to. We’re not a physical team (which Hartley is) and we didn’t set the screens we needed to in order to free up shots.” The Lady Panthers (4-2) had several open looks at the bucket during the first half but a number of them along the baseline failed to find the mark.
