Like most sports, basketball is a conflict between offense and defense.
At North Union High School on Wednesday, NU downed Fairbanks 52-31 in a game that featured more strong defense than robust offense.
The winning Wildcats limited their cross-county rivals to just eight two-point goals the entire game and held the Panthers scoreless for approximately 12 minutes at the start of the second half.
The Panther defense was also solid most of the game, holding the bigger, more experienced Wildcats to a modest 40 field goal attempts.
NU took immediate advantage of the 6-6 height of Evan Jamison, who hit a short jumper and stuck back an offensive rebound to give his team a 4-0 lead.
Fairbanks senior Jake Detwiler answered with a three-ball to get the Panthers on the board.
After NU spurted to an 11-7 lead, a power lay-up from FHS’ Brandon Stewart and a 16-foot jumper by Nick Gibson knotted the score at 11 apiece at the first break.
