Ridgeway tallied 23 points to lead the undefeated Lady Cats to a 62-47 win over Fairbanks. –––– For the most part, the North Union girls hoop squad was able to dictate the style of a non-league girls basketball game at NUHS on Wednesday. The Lady Cats forced 25 turnovers with its pressing defense and often turned the extra possessions into points during a 62-47 victory over cross-county rival Fairbanks. “We knew their defense was good and we knew what we had to do against their press,” FHS coach Rob Riddle said. “We prepared hard but we had trouble making adjustments on the floor when they changed what they were doing.” Maturity and experience was another factor which favored the home team. Led by Shanda Ridgeway’s game-high 23 points, the NU seniors outscored their Panther counterparts 39-16, which more than matched the final margin of victory. Fairbanks junior Lyndsey DeRoads popped in a pair of quick buckets to give her team an early 4-0 lead after two possessions. NU bounced back with a 14-2 run that was interrupted when Korah Morris fed Gracie Burrell at the end of a fast break. The NU rally, which gave the Cats a 14-6 lead at the first break, was sparked by a pair of three-point goals from Ridgeway and six takeaways by the defense.
