The visitors from Lima Temple Christian led most of the game and eventually won 56-54 but the contest was literally not decided until the final second. Fairbanks had to be considered the underdog, since the Pioneers came in with a 6-4 record while the Panthers were looking to end a seven-game losing streak. Although the losing skid grew by a game, it was not for lack of effort. The effort paid the biggest dividends in the opening quarter, as the Panthers jumped out to a 12-9 lead. After a three-ball from Temple’s Tyler Sutton broke a 2-2 tie, FHS went on a 10-4 run, highlighted by a trey from Fairbanks’ Nick Gibson. The second period proved to be the Sutton showcase. Tyler scored the first 10 points of the period to put his team in front for good at 19-12. Fairbanks answered with points on six consecutive possessions to slice the deficit to 26-25. A three from Sutton pushed the margin to 29-25 and a jumper from Brandon Stewart cut it back to two with a jumper in the lane. A three-point play by Curtis Scheiderer closed the gap to 31-30 on the Panthers’ second possession of the second half but the visitors responded with a 13-6 run to carry a 44-37 cushion into the final frame.
