North Union’s depth and balance more than overcame a game-high 31 points from Guenther in a 65-40 victory. –––– Having the game’s high scorer on your team is nice but it doesn’t guarantee a victory. That was the case at North Union High School on Tuesday, where Ridgemont senior Paige Guenther scorched the nets for 31 points, only to see her team lose by 25. The home team cruised to a 65-40 victory on the strength of a much more balanced attack and a defense that forced the visitors into a crippling 32 turnovers. NU also featured a high scorer, as Reagan Stofcheck netted six three-pointers over the Gophers’ zone and a total of 26 points. She added 10 steals for an impressive double-double. Stofcheck’s effort was strongly supported, whereas only two teammates scored a total of nine points in support of Guenther. Thanks to Guenther, the Gophers made a game of it for the first half. She tallied six points in the first quarter and her team trailed by a deuce at 15-13 at the first break. From then on, it was one against five and that spelled success for North Union. NU began the second period with a 9-2 run that featured four consecutive turnovers by the Gophers. The rally gave the Cats a 24-15 lead and they protected that margin at 29-21 at intermission.
