The Lady Panthers fell to the Pirates, 50-32. –––– There was a good deal on the line for Fairbanks’ young varsity girls basketball team on Thursday when it hosted Riverside. A victory would have been extremely important for a couple of reasons. One, it would have drawn the Lady Panthers to .500 on the season with two difficult games ahead against Elgin and Jonathan Alder. Two, it could have assured FHS of a tie for the NWCC championship. With so much riding on the outcome of the contest, however, things couldn’t have gone more wrong as Fairbanks fell to the Pirates, 50-32. As a result, the Lady Panthers may tie for second or third on the circuit. Riverside started the game in a man-to-man defense but the Lady Panthers (8-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference) couldn’t get very many outside shots to drop. For the game, FHS shot 23 percent from the floor. When the Pirates, who wrapped up the conference title with a 5-0 record (with one game left to play), shifted to a 2-3 zone, things went from bad to worse.
