Gibson led FHS with 18 points in a 65-58 loss to top-seeded Cardington in a Division III sectional final on Friday. –––– Although Fairbanks was forced out of the Division III tournament on Friday night, the Panthers played a strong game and accomplished one lesser goal. After watching his team lose 65-58 to top-seeded Cardington in a sectional final at Gahanna Lincoln High School, head coach Larry Morris conceded that his team performed well. “We felt we were definitely better than a number 21 seed,” he said. “I think we proved that we were by the way we played in our win on Tuesday and in a close loss tonight.” It was a close loss indeed, as the Panthers led most of the first half and twice had the deficit down to four points with the ball in the final 90 seconds. Before the game, fans may have expected a shoot-out between Cardington senior Riley Thomas and Fairbanks junior Nick Gibson, Thomas is among the leading scorers in the Central District and Gibson has been particularly prolific in the past couple of weeks. As it turned out, Thomas was the biggest reason why the Pirates won, as he led all scorers with 31 points. Gibson also had a good game leading the Panthers with 18. Fairbanks scored first on a jumper from Patrick Scheiderer and Thomas countered with a pair of jumpers for the Pirates. Gibson got into the act with a baseline drive and a mid-range jumper and Jake Detwiler canned a three to give the Panthers an 11-6 edge.
