I’ll try to keep up with social media at games
––––
The 2017 high school football season is only a few hours away, depending on when you read this column.
As in years past, the Journal-Tribune will be providing plenty of coverage for the five area high schools – Marysville, Fairbanks, North Union, Jonathan Alder and Triad – in our area.
Game stories and photos will be included in Saturday morning’s edition of the newspaper, however, there will be an added feature to our coverage this year.
We are also going to be turning to social media to keep fans updated on the scores of the games.
At the end of each quarter of games we cover, we will be putting updated scores on the Journal-Tribune’s Facebook page.
This added feature is through the sponsorship of Memorial Health and Kirby Auto Parts and Towing.
Fans who do not attend games may follow along with the scores on Facebook.
Managing editor Chad Williamson did this with Marysville High School games last season and sports writer Sam Dillon did the same during Jonathan Alder’s state playoff game a year ago.
For me, this is a new adventure.
Although I’ve got a Facebook page, which I don’t use all that often, I’m not really big into social media.
I don’t twitter, snapchat or fiddle with any of the other social media outlets.
Over the past few months, I’ve begun to do a little bit of texting, but I’m not really comfortable with it.
Maybe I’m a little too “old-school,” but all of this social stuff with all of these devices is a bit over my head… I guess.
Any way, I’m going to have a little help tonight at the Fairbanks-Benjamin Logan football game.
Reporter Will Channell, who is really into the social media, will be with me, taking photographs of the game, while I follow the action for Saturday morning’s story. He will be in charge of the Facebook updates during this game.
He’s supposed to teach me how to do it, so I can add this to my reporting.
I just hope I’m able to quickly catch on to all of this.
