Editor’s note: This is the 52nd of a series about growing up in Marysville during the late 1930s and the 1940s written by Bill Boyd. Each article is a snapshot of the people, businesses and activities during that era as seen through the eyes of a young boy.
Boyd was born in Marysville in 1932, graduated from Marysville High School in 1950, and lived the greater part of his life here.

I believe it was in the summer of 1941, when I got word that kids in Marysville were going to be able to compete locally in the annual Soap Box Derby. Although I was only nine years old, I thought I would like to try my hand at that. It was announced several months before the competition, so I would have plenty of time to build my racecar.
