A man who allegedly attacked an ex-girlfriend after a party could be facing more than a decade in prison.
A Union County Grand Jury has indicted William D. Griffith, 37, of Springfield, charging him with one count each of kidnapping and assault.
According to court documents, on Oct. 29, the victim went to a party and Griffith went also.
“He apparently got jealous,” said Union County Prosecutor Dave Phillips.
The prosecutor said Griffith allegedly dragged the victim to his car and would not let her leave.
“He smashed her head and face into the dash, grabbed her by the throat, reached across and choked her,” said Phillips.
He added, “there was some indication of strangulation.”
The woman was eventually able to contact her mother and Griffith allegedly allowed her to get out of the car.
“When she got home, she basically barricaded herself in because she was so traumatized by what had just happened,” Phillips said.
He said taking the woman from the party, holding her in the car and the fear that led her to barricade herself, “all came into play with the kidnapping charge, because it demonstrates his conduct, allegedly, and her response.”
If convicted on all counts, Griffith could be sentenced to as many as 10 years and six months in prison.
