The Ohio State Highway Patrol released details this morning about a fatal semi crash that occurred Wednesday at about 5:55 a.m.
According to a release the crash occurred on U.S. 33 on the eastbound lane near the Logan County line. A westbound 2004 Toyota Tundra, driven by Lacy D. Smith, 56, of Powell, when Smith lost control of the vehicle due to icy road conditions.
Smith’s vehicle crossed the snow-covered median and entered the eastbound lane of traffic before being struck by a 2018 Mack semi. Smith was immediately ejected from the Tundra and both vehicles caught fire.
The release states that David J. Oen, 58, of Saint Marys, was operating the truck. He was on duty with the Saint Marys Trucking Company.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Oen was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in serious condition.
The crash is still under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Logan County branch of the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted the investigation at the scene.
