Gary David Spurgeon, 57, of West Mansfield, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Memorial Hospital in Marysville.
A diesel mechanic his entire career, he was a senior technician at Cummins of Ohio in Hilliard. He was also a former associate of Fyda Freightliner in Hilliard and Republic Airways at Port Columbus.
Upon graduating from Marysville High School, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for eight years as a flight engineer for Chinook helicopters. Upon his discharge from the Army, he was an associate at Sikorsky Lockheed Martin as a test data analyst and for Rockwell International, where he contributed to building the B-2 bomber.
He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes. As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and woodworking and was an avid beekeeper. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1960, in Delaware, to the late David A. and Linda Jervis Spurgeon.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Julia Claudio Spurgeon, whom he married on Aug. 6, 1981, in Germany; sons, David (Brandy) Spurgeon of Marysville and Daniel Spurgeon of Richwood; grandchildren, Ethan, Maria, Kaylee, Alexis and Macy; siblings, Steve (Jennifer) Spurgeon of Marysville, Cheryl (Jody) Davia of Marysville, Jackie (Alan) Hinderer of Marysville and Greg Spurgeon of Marysville; sister-in-law, Cristina (Clinton) Fyffe; mother-in-law, Maria Claudio of Richwood; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Underwood Funeral Home in Marysville, where the family will receive friends beginning at 3 p.m. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Herman Cemetery, Whitestone Road, Dover Township, Marysville.
