Gerald William “G.W.” Claar, 89, of Marysville, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at Memorial Gables.
A lifelong contractor, he owned and operated G.W. Claar & Son Lumber Supply in Allen Township. He graduated from Allen Township High School in 1946. A former real estate salesman in Pueblo, Colorado, and Lake Havasu, Arizona, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. One of his greatest joys involved taking a trip to Canada with his father for a moose hunting expedition. His favorite pastime was participating in demolition derbies.
He was a former trustee for Allen Township. A World War II history buff, he participated with the development of the Union County Veterans Monument, located on Courthouse Square. He truly enjoyed socializing at Mrs. Renison’s donut shop and will be missed by many good friends.
He was born May 17, 1928, in Union County, to the late Clarence Alvin and Emma Kandel Claar. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Lynn Claar; grandson, Austin Thomas Claar; and older brother, Donald Dalton Claar, who was killed in action during World War II.
He is survived by his daughter, Glenna (Steve) Bell of Marysville; son, Gary (Connie) Claar of Milford Center; grandchildren, Audrey Marie Claar of Milford Center, Rachel Katherine Claar of Dublin, Michael Steven (Kayla) Bell of Shawnee Hills and Tiffany Lynn (Chris) Sobas of Mesa, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Elijah and Kaylee Sobas of Mesa, Arizona; and former sister-in-law, Doris Story.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Underwood Funeral Home. Following calling hours, graveside services will be held at Oakdale Cemetery beside his parents and daughter.
