Marysville’s varsity wrestling team hosted Dublin Coffman in an Ohio Capital Conference match on Thursday that, according to MHS head coach Shawn Andrews, resembled a heavyweight boxing fight.
The combatants traded “punch after punch” throughout the dual in a packed gym before Coffman outlasted MHS, 34-32.
The match began at 126 pounds as Coffman started with a major decision over Marysville’s Payne Miller.
MHS’ Cole Hosterman answered with a major decision of his own at 132.
Coffman won the next two bouts as Marysville’s 138-pounder Sam Shroyer dropped a 7-4 decision and Chris Lambert gave up a pin filling in for the injured Walker Heard at 145.
The back-and-forth trend continued as Marysville responded with consecutive bonus-point victories.
Jake Marsh (152) picked up a pin and Tyler Bates (160) scored a 15-0 technical fall.
In the end, the Monarchs may have let Dublin back in the match when they didn’t bump Marsh to 160 and Bates to 170 in order to counter Coffman’s strength at the end of its lineup.
Momentum swung its way back in the Rocks’ direction as they won both the 170 and 182-pound matches by decisions.
Marysville looked to gain steam as it won the next three matches in dominating fashion.
Logan Painter (195) scored a 15-0 technical fall, while Ethan Smegal (220) and Tyler Connolly (285) notched pins.
MHS took a 32-19 lead after Connolly’s win.
The final pendulum swing proved to be too much as Coffman picked up pins at 106 over Quentin Miller and at 113 against Nate Thompson.
That brought the score to 32-31 in MHS’ favor.
Jaimeson Bigler dropped the 120-pound battle by a decision.

“This was a tough loss to take,” said Andrews. “We knew coming in that they returned three state qualifiers and some good young wrestlers.
“Our guys who won did what we asked of them as all six picked up bonus-point wins,” he said. “Bigler, Lambert and Dewitt all fought hard against their returning state qualifiers, but in the end we needed to pick up one more win.
“We didn’t have two of our starters in the line-up who are battling injuries, but we can’t use that as an excuse,” said Andrews. “You have to compete with the guys who are available.
“With the OCC out of our control, our focus has to turn to (the upcoming) state duals series and getting better every day in practice.”
