TERRILL
––––
He’s a quiet, unassuming guy (except when he’s on the basketball court) and doesn’t call much attention to himself.
He has though, carved out one of the best career coaching records in Union County High School hoop history.
North Union boys roundball boss Brian Terrill reached a milestone a little more than a week ago when he won his 150th game with the Wildcats.
Coupled with what he accomplished during his earlier tenure as NU’s girls coach, he has won more than 250 games during his two-decade stint at the school.
Terrill took over the girls program during a time when the Lady Cats were experiencing an uncustomary down cycle.
He quickly returned the program to the type of heights it experienced under previous coaches such as Becky LaRue and Jackie Boggs.
What people may not remember is that Terrill originally worked in the boys program as the junior varsity coach.
It was during a time that the Wildcats did not have as much success.
Once an opening occurred in the girls program, he readily jumped in and returned that team to a great deal of success.
Prior to Terrill taking over the boys team, the Wildcats had winning seasons here and there. For the most part, however, boys basketball at NU had struggled.
The Wildcat boys slumped a bit last year, but had previously enjoyed a couple of 20-plus win seasons under Terrill’s tutelage.
Another thing I like about the coach is his complete openness and honesty with those of us at the Journal-Tribune/Richwood Gazette who have covered his games.
He doesn’t hide behind “coach-speak” when the Wildcats don’t play well. He will also readily admit when he makes coaching mistakes.
That honesty is a fresh approach, in my opinion.
Congratulations are in order for a very good coach and an even better person in Brian Terrill for reaching this victory milestone.
I hope there are many more to follow.
