The Triad girls basketball team defeated Jackson Center, 48-46, during the first round of Division IV sectional action on Saturday at Sidney High School.
“This is really a big win for the girls and, I hope, our program, said Triad coach Jeff Merklin. This was not the same Jackson Center team which made the last two Final Fours, but they are very well-coached and are still one of the most respected programs in the state.
“To be able to knock them off is, I think, really special for Triad girls basketball.”
Senior point guard Alea Ferguson played a major role in the win. She scored 14 points, including four-of-five shooting from beyond the arc, and played solid defense.
She did not leave the floor at any point during the game.
“Alea is simply a special, special high school basketball player,” said Merklin.
Freshman Frani LeVan had her best game of the season, adding 11 markers, four rebounds and two assists.
Finnish exchange student Emma Vanninen chipped in with eight points.
“Again, though, this game was just like the rest of the season….an entire team effort,” Merklin said. “Kris Bailey only had two points, but played her usual excellent defense and also led the team in assists with three.
“For the season, we now have 244 assists,” he said. “Last year, we only had 61. The girls have played very well together this year.”
With the win, the Lady Cards improved to 12-11 on the season.
They will return to Sidney on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Houston.
