The ball field in the Champaign County village of Cable started to receive a facelift in 2017.
Wayne Township officials are looking to continue it this year.
The ball field, which is home to many Triad school district boys and girls, underwent renovations, thanks in part to a community development block grant and monetary donations.
“We received a $29,000 grant and donations that helped us put new fencing, a shelterhouse and new crushed brick at the ball field,” said Larry Dagger, who is chairman of the township’s park committee.
The organization is now attempting to raise money to construct restrooms that comply with the American Disabilities Act and playground equipment.
The inaugural Cable Country Classic 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 5 to raise money toward that project.
Runners and walkers may register online at www.speedy-feet.com by April 1 for a free T-shirt.
The top three male and female finishers will receive a trophy and gift certificate.
Funds generated from the event will go towards the park project.
“The new fencing cost $8,750 and the crushed brick cost between $6,000 and $7,000,” said Dagger. “The shelter house cost $27,615 and all of the money was provided through the grant and donations.”
The entire project over a two-year period will carry a price tag of between $90,000 and $100,000.
Dagger said the upgrades at the park were sorely needed.
“The field is used for both baseball and softball,” he said, adding the ball park was going “down hill” prior to the renovations.
