BUMP
Laura P. Bump, 81, of Delaware, died Thursday evening, Dec. 14, 2017, at Willow Brook Christian Village.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and master’s degree in psychology and social work from Kent State University. She worked as a middle education teacher in the Cleveland area before making her way to Delaware with her husband, Richard. She worked as a health and physical education teacher, coach and mentor for 50 years with schools in Bedford and at Ohio Wesleyan University.
She had a passion for sports, coaching, softball, basketball, volleyball and field hockey. She enjoyed attending the “little brown jug” race every year and looked forward to the opening day of baseball season for the Cleveland Indians.
She fought hard for the equality of women in sports. Her greatest accomplishment was bringing the women’s golf program to Ohio Wesleyan University, which is still going on this day.
She was an avid and very skilled golfer. Her greatest golfing accomplishment was acing the 13th hole at Mill Creek Golf Club in Ostrander, home of Ben Curtis, 2003 Open Champion. The Laura Bump Invitational Golf Tournament for NCAA Women’s Division III is played every April at Mill Creek Golf Course, with more than 15 regional teams competing in honor of the work and dedication that she put into the sport.
Her other involvements include being a member of Daughters of American Revolution, as well as being a member of OHSAA and an official for the NCAA. She volunteered at the “free store” in Delaware, assisted with the crop walk put on by Asbury Methodist Church and volunteered for the Marysville Meals on Wheels program for more than 28 years.
She was born on June 15, 1936, in Shaker Heights, the oldest daughter of three, to the late Stanley and Cornelia (King) Pierce. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Bump, in 2006, and brother, William Pierce.
She is survived by her sister, Martha (Steven) Harris, and good friend, Donna M. Stusek.
The Rev. Philip Wilden will officiate a funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Dr., Delaware. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Central Ohio Chapter, 1379 Dublin Rd., Columbus, OH 43215.
