Reps. Tracy Richardson, Kevin Miller Introduce Bill Supporting Ohio Psychiatry and Family Medicine Residents

COLUMBUS – State Representatives Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) and Kevin Miller (R-Newark) recently introduced a bill to appropriate $10 million to support medical residents focusing on psychiatry and family medicine practice.

“During my service in the Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio has experienced significant increases in the demand for mental health services and healthcare,” said Richardson. “This bill seeks to address these demands by increasing access to residency slots for medical students being educated in our State. Better opportunities for medical residency training means more physicians treating the growing medical needs of Ohioans.”

“Physicians typically stay in the state where they complete their residency,” said Miller. “Therefore, increasing residency positions will directly help alleviate our shortage of physicians in Ohio.”

Administered through the Ohio Department of Health, the legislation would appropriate funding to be distributed to Ohio hospitals supporting medical residency slots for training in family medicine or psychiatry fields.

This bill awaits a number and committee assignment.
