MHS’ Nick Johnson (54) chases Olentangy Berlin quarterback Harrison Brewster on this play. Brewster led the Bears to victory over the Monarchs. (Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) — Marysville football coach Brent Johnson thought his team’s wild momentum swings were behind them. “I thought we were through with it (swings) and it reared its ugly head – a 6-to-10 minute period in a game where things got sideways,” Johnson . In recent games the Monarchs had eliminated game-sinking, horrific stretches and played a more consistent brand of Marysville football. But Friday night, for a span of minutes in the middle…

Preliminary investigation into a culvert bridge repair in North Lewisburg has revealed a problem that might come with a price tag north of $100,000. The short structure that spans Spain Creek provides access to the village’s wastewater treatment plan from Route 245. While the structure is still passable for passenger vehicles, it has been deemed unsafe for heavier loads, such as the trucks that haul sludge from the facility. Village Administrator Todd Freyhof explained that six weeks ago he asked the Champaign County Commissioner’s office to look over the culvert, expecting that it would need to be replaced at some…

(Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) — Marysville obliterated Thomas Worthington 48-7 Friday night with the help of some stellar special teams plays and on all of them, senior cornerback J.T. Hiltscher was there. On the opening kickoff the Cardinals tried a throwback that went awry and Hiltscher was there to help make the tackle at the four-yard-line. When the Cardinals fumbled a first quarter punt back to the Monarchs, Hiltscher was there on the tackle.…

Bryson Stott blasted a grand slam for the Phillies Wednesday night to help Philadelphia sweep the Marlins in the National League Wild Card round. The crowd exploded. It was a magical moment for the home fans. Thursday morning I came across a video of the homer in which the on-field audio was isolated, removing the announcers, so it basically sounded like you were standing by the plate. Tai Verdes’ song “A-O-K” played as Stott came to the plate. Excited crowd noise built. On the first pitch the bat cracked. The crowd roared. The stadium’s illuminated Liberty Bell tolled repeatedly. Anyone…

(Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) — Marysville jumped out to a 14-0 lead last week, only to watch it slip away late in the game on deep pass. After jumping out to another two-score advantage against Dublin Jerome on Friday, the Monarchs were determined not to let history repeat itself. The Marysville gridders fended off a late charge by the Celtics, coming up with a defensive stop and holding on for a 34-27 win. “I…

The Marysville School District is hoping to never again see a day like Aug. 29, 2023. That day encapsulated the constantly fluid busing situation within the district that has forced supervisors to find on-the-fly solutions to issues created by a driver shortage. “If I had to do it (Aug. 29) over again, I would say we can’t do it,” Marysville Director of Operations Ryan Walker said, meaning canceling school might have been the better option. At a special meeting last week, board of education members had agreed, in principle, to a plan that would adjust start and end times within…

(Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) — Anyone who thought Marysville’s game against Hilliard Darby wouldn’t be decided in the final minutes doesn’t know their history. The previous three contests have been decided on the final few plays and Friday’s game for the Monarchs was no different. Cole Horvath’s Hail Mary grab in traffic and the subsequent two-point conversion upended a gutsy effort by the 2-4 Monarchs, handing them a 15-14 loss. “We told them all week there are…

The traditional route follows Main Street north to Elwood Avenue, but street improvements forced the change. In the first half alone, Papas was 21-for-23 for 350…

To avoid on-the-fly decision making during the current bus driver shortage, the Marysville Board of Education took steps Monday night to adjust the daily schedule in all buildings in order to create flexibility in district routes. At the special meeting, the board voted unanimously to begin instituting a plan that will, in essence, see older students start and end their school day a little earlier and younger students begin and end a bit later. Marysville Director of Operations Ryan Walker said there have been pros and cons to each solution the district has explored to address the busing problem. The…

As local students settle back into class, I thought I would share one of the most vivid memories from my school years. I refused to believe Millard Fillmore was a President. It’s funny the flashbulb type memories that I still have from Edgewood Elementary. There is really no pattern to explain the things I recall. Some of them are traumatic, like the time I tripped and ran into a brick wall, breaking my nose. Or the time I wore an ill-fitting Cleveland Browns sweatsuit to school and was called an “orange Popsicle.” I recall nearly throwing up the first time…
