North Lewisburg Council voted to allow the closing of a small section of Route 245/East Maple Street to accommodate Cardinal Pizza’s “Celebrate Life” Festival on Oct. 14. The fourth-annual festival is a fundraiser for the Drew Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund. Don Van Zant, Cardinal’s Pizza owner, was the recipient of Mason’s liver after he was killed in a car crash in 2012. Van Zant requested the road be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 14 to accommodate the festival that celebrates organ donation and the generosity of the North Lewisburg community. Triad is ready to start a new school year next Wednesday with many summer maintenance projects completed. Superintendent Chris Piper said all the window installations and roofing repairs are complete at the elementary and middle schools. Water pumps at the high school have been repaired and the elementary school water pump has been connected to the middle school. In addition, siding was repaired on the field house, the propane tank was repaired, concrete work throughout the district and handicapped parking spaces were added in front of the high school. “It’s been a busy summer,” Piper said. Triad is hard at work this summer as it continues to make building improvements across the district. All but seven windows are completed at the elementary and middle schools. Superintendent Chris Piper said the entire project, including trim work and caulking, should be done by the end of the month. “(The windows) look great in both buildings and have made a big difference in the classrooms, much brighter,” Piper said. North Lewisburg needs to decide as to how it will handle new state legislation that allows medical marijuana for people with certain conditions. Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth asked council to review the “Medical Marijuana Overview” provided by the Logan Union Champaign (LUC) Regional Planning Commission. The LUC provides guidance, support, education and training to local governments. Council will need to determine if it wants to allow any type of zoning for marijuana entities including cultivating, processing, dispensing and testing or if it will mirror other municipalities and ban all medical marijuana operations. Triad School District will pay $15,000 to settle a lawsuit after the district refused to allow a television station to videotape a meeting. At its recent meeting, the Triad Local Schools board of education approved an agreement to settle a lawsuit out of court with Cox Media WHIO-TV Channel 7 Dayton for $15,000. “Triad Local Schools is committed to continuing to balance our open, transparent relationship with the community, including media outlets, and protecting our students’ right to privacy,” Superintendent Chris Piper wrote in a statement. “Under this agreement (with Cox Media), the board is able to uphold those commitments…

Representatives from the newly formed Triad community networking meetings presented to North Lewisburg council on what the group has been working on since organizing in January. Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth reported in an email that Triad Local Schools Superintendent Chris Piper and Stacey Logwood, shared with council that the group comprised of community leaders meets monthly to gain a better understanding of community agency roles, responsibilities, and expectations in response to a community crisis. Through a recent agreement, the village of Mechanicsburg will provide dedicated police services to the village of North Lewisburg. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office had provided deputies dedicated to patrolling the village, but when the existing contract expired in January, North Lewisburg was left without dedicated law enforcement coverage.
