The stalemate has been broken once more. Sports writer Sam Dillon and publisher Kevin Behrens have been neck-and-neck for much of the Pigskin Pickers race. Behrens was the leader in the clubhouse but after picking some long shots that didn’t pan out Dillon was able to climb back in to a one-game edge a couple of weeks ago, only to see Behrens tie him for the top. The deadlock has once again been broken. Dillon posted a 5-2 record last week and stands atop of the Pickers with a season mark of 88-32. There is now a two-way tie for…

By Michaela Writesel Over the summer, six NHS and FCCLA members from Fairbanks, as well as a couple of Junior Fair Board members, teamed up to provide meals to the auction buyers at the Union County Fair. It all started with a call from Jon Cook the spring before asking if the groups were willing to help, and they all jumped on the opportunity. This act of community service, serving pulled pork, coleslaw and beans, was such a success that numbers of those served were not counted and those six members have been invited back for another round of feeding…

For the second time in the past month, I have been totally dismayed and shocked at the handling of a situation involving alleged sexual abuse/misconduct. The first one revolved around Ohio State Football Coach Urban Meyer and the unfair suspension for the first three games this season, and the resulting blot on the record and reputation of such a fine man and coach. The second one concerns Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who has been nominated for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. A week before a Senate committee was to vote on recommending him, an allegation was made public…

Support of Ohio Hi-Point’s permanent improvement levy will offer enhanced lab-learning classes in fields that have jobs to be filled within our own communities. It will also provide students with more opportunities for advanced technical training needed for the modern-day workforce. As an internship coordinator at the Early College High School (one of Ohio Hi-Point’s satellite schools), I have been working with both small and large businesses in our county to develop partnerships…

The value of a local newspaper can mean many things to local residents. Some see our role as the watch dog of the local tax dollars. Others liken us to being a nosy neighbor, but most don’t think of us as vehicle to help keep the community safe. Recently a Logan County man was charged with impersonating a fireman several times in recent weeks. One such time was at the scene of a traffic crash covered by the Journal-Tribune. Many of our photos show evidence that he was at the scene in a uniform, which turned out to be stolen.…
