The increase in Ohio’s gas tax has been approved after a long stalemate with House and Senate votes. Legislators decided on 10.5 cents a gallon for gas and 19 cents for diesel. For officials representing Union County at the state level, the vote was difficult but necessary. Rep. Union County leads the state in employment opportunities for the developmentally disabled. According to a report from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD), Union County ranks first by employing 66 percent of that specific population of adults, compared to a state average is at 31 percent. “Union County has been responsible for a large percentage of community employment for a very long time,” said Kara Brown, superintendent with the Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “We’ve been doing community employment for at least thirty years.” Brown said the county’s success employing adults with developmental disabilities can be attributed to…

In a 2-1 vote, the Jerome Township Trustees voted to rezone 12.98 acres of land from medium density residential to planned development. The area, located on Watkins-California Road, is being looked at by Jeff Stroupe, owner of Terra Land Holdings LLC, for the purpose of moving his landscaping company to the proposed area east of U.S. 33. Currently, Stroupe’s company is split between a location on Hyland-Croy Road which houses trucks and equipment and office space in Dublin. Jerome Township Fire Chief Doug Stewart, has been named the township’s new director of departments. Trustees voted 2-1 on the measure Monday evening, appointing Stewart to the new part-time position that will fulfill duties similar to a township administrator. “With all the growth happening in the township, we really need someone in this positon now,” said Trustee C.J. Lovejoy. “We’ve been really impressed with his work in the fire department and think his leadership would help give the township some direction.” The position will have Stewart working 10-15 hours a week with an additional $1,000 a month in pay.
