During Monday night’s regular council meeting, Richwood Mayor Scott Jerew reported smoke testing of the sewer lines will be performed today. Should rain delay the process, testing will be held on Wednesday. Jerew also stated that the testing will not be abandoned this time, as it has been in the past. Village Administrator Monte Asher stated that the EPA has been monitoring the inflow and infliltration of water going into the sewer plant. The Richwood Village council met Monday evening and heard about more support for the new walking path at Richwood Park. Gail DeGood-Guy, representing the Richwood VFW Post 870 and Larry Nibert, a representative from the Richwood American Legion Post 40, presented checks to Mayor Scott Jerew during the meeting. The funds are earmarked for a new bench to be installed at Richwood Park in honor of all veterans. Logan Dunn, a former third grade teacher at North Union Elementary took a new position this year at the middle school, serving as the Dean of Students. He is there to teach staff and students about PAX. PAX training helps reinforce positive behavior in students during school. The training is to recognize positive behavior in class and on the playground. An example is when a student raises their hand when a question is asked. Richwood Mayor Scott Jerew told members of Richwood Village Council Monday night that Von Beal has resigned from his council seat. Beal’s unexpired term ends Dec. 31, 2021. Council will be accepting resume’s seeking to fill the position, hopefully by its Sept. 10 council meeting. Richwood Village Council heard from mayor Scott Jerew that the park project is near completition and the trail committee is awaiting on the final walkthrough. Jerew did mention that the walking path ribbon cutting is set for Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. More information will be announced to the public in the future. Jerew also told council that he received word that the park committee has received $100,000 from the State of Ohio through the Capitol Improvement Fund. Bev Wasserbeck, Food service Director for North Union Schools, addressed the board at Monday night’s meeting. She explained the guidelines of the food service that they have to follow in furnishing healthy foods to the students. The state has certain guidelines for food that is offered to the students. A few years ago, the types of food on the menu changed, removing a lot of sugar and fats and providing fruits, vegetables and whole grain items. The North Union Elementary School (NUES) was the site for the monthly school board meeting Monday evening. Darlene Allison, principal at NUES, welcomed the board and all the guests present. Third grade students led the Pledge of Allegiance to open the meeting. Allison shared information about what is going on at the elementary school and shared stats about all grade levels students have worked on throughout the year. Richwood Village Council members approved a deal to obtain a newer bucket truck for the village. The current village bucket truck, a 1989 Ford, is in need of numerous repairs, which is not considered cost-effective, due to its age. Village administrator Monte Asher and clerk Timothy Goodwin found a used 2005 Ford F-550 bucket truck with a a 42-foot working height and a 300 pound bucket capacity. The North Union Board of Education met Monday evening with board president Dennis Hall absent from the meeting and vice president Jean Wedding presided. Middle School Principal Matt Burggraf updated the board on several highlights taking place at the building. He spoke on the accomplishments of the seventh grade boys basketball team going 17-2 this winter. Students in the robotics program have been competing and will be traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, for the World VEX Robotics competition the end of this month. Richwood Council voted unanimously at Monday night’s regular meeting to purchase a new street roller for the village. Village Administrator Monte Asher had received bids for several types of street rollers that could be used in compressing new hot mix when filling potholes on village streets. It is equipped with a vibrating drum that will that will help compact the hot mix into the pothole and and adhere to the asphalt around it. Members of Richwood Village Council heard several updates regarding village finances, trash collection and projects taking place in the village. Mayor Scott Jerew was absent from the meeting due to recovering from recent surgery. Council president Jack Moore conducted the meeting. The first visitor was Andrew Coutts, a representative from the Ohio Treasurer of State’s office. The water has been high at Richwood Lake and council has finally found the drain that has been a well kept secret. When the village receives several inches of rain, the lake floods out of its banks and has caused some safety issues over the years. Council has been concerned of the high water that comes out of its banks and covers access roads to various parts of the park.
