North Union students started school this week, so that means it is also time for the annual Richwood Independent Fair. The First Annual Richwood Tri-County Fair was held in 1892. Several citizens learned that Morris W. Hill’s racetrack in Richwood was for sale, so they called a meeting to see what the prospects were of having permanent grounds and the probable success of having a yearly permanent exhibition. Richwood Village Council is trying to clean up blighted homes, though it’s not going how members had hoped. During the Richwood council meeting Monday night, councilman Von Beal asked Village Solicitor Alison Boggs How is the foreclosure on the nine properties was progressing. “I have not heard a word,” Boggs replied. Council is frustrated that the process has been stalled. They have asked questions for several years as to their rights and what they have to do to clean up the village from blighted homes. The North Union Board of Education heard a presentation by Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton and North Union School Superintendent Rich Baird regarding the need for a school resource officer in the school district. Patton explained that he was assured money from an Ohio Attorney General’s Office Drug Prevention Grant would pay for half of an officer’s salary as a school resource officer. The only problem was to find funding for the other half of the salary. Monday night’s regular meeting of Richwood Village Council was filled with updates of various projects. Eric Mescher of Access Engineering presented some arial photos of Richwood Lake with a proposed walking trail around the lake. The village has had phase one completed and is hoping to use grant money to complete the second phase of the project. The plans showed areas where the banks of the lake will need reinforced, an area where a parking lot may need to be adjusted, and other possible needs. Before Monday night’s meeting ended, Richwood Village councilman Von Beal asked village solicitor Alison Boggs “How long does it take to get a certified delinquent property foreclosed, sold at sheriff’s auction and be done with it?” Beal said that he has done extensive research on two properties on East Blagrove Street that the Union County Auditor has certified as delinquent properties back in 2011. After they have been declared delinquent for two years of back taxes, he assumed that the properties would go on the sheriff’s auction to be sold. “It bothers me that we expand our government,” Beal said.…

Matt Keever, a Richwood area resident approached the North Union Board of Education about the negative culture of the school district. He also is concerned about the number of teaching staff who have left the district. At the last board meeting, several teachers were recognized because they had retired. A few other teachers have accepted positions at other schools. Changes in some teaching positions have been made for this fall’s school year. When Richwood Village Council met Monday evening, Mayor Scott Jerew was absent from the meeting, but council approved a resolution which authorizes him to work on securing contracts on three parcels of property within the village. Money for these proposed purchases comes from a State Capital Improvements grant and the Clean Ohio Foundation. At last week’s North Union School board meeting, the board approved the sale of 5.37 acres for $37,000 and an easement agreement for 1.015 acres of school property valued at $5,500.
