Katie Bischoff of Marysville was inducted earlier this month into Ohio Wesleyan University’s Phi Society honorary. The Phi Society recognizes sophomores who achieved a grade point average of 3.30 or better during their freshman year and who also are in the upper 20 percent of their class. Founded in 1929, the Phi Society is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society.

Macy Wanamaker –––– Fairbanks students attend OHC Arts Festival By Kate White On March 12, Fairbanks students attended the Ohio Heritage Conference Fine Arts Festival. Choir, band, and visual arts students were invited from every school in the OHC. The choir students worked on three pieces, practicing as a whole group and in sectionals. The band rehearsed as a full band with four pieces, and then broke off into groups based on instruments. The visual arts students worked individually to create mass projects together. The Marysville High School Alumni Association will host its annual alumni banquet on Saturday, May 11, in the high school Cafeteria. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the 140th Alumni Banquet begins at 6 p.m. Again this year, alumni and guests are invited to experience the alumni banquet with friends and share memories of years past. The North Union Board of Education held their monthly meeting at the North Union Middle School Monday evening. Board members toured the facility prior to the start of the meeting. NUMS Principal Matt Burggraf gave a report of great things taking place in the school. A seventh grade boy talked about the “Driven” program, that was started by Roy Hall and Antonio Smith, both former Ohio State University students and football players. Marysville school officials are gearing up for a change in the elementary report cards. During a work session of the Marysville Board of Education on Monday night, district superintendent Diane Mankins gave each board member a copy of the book “Grading for Equity” by Joe Feldman. The focus of the book is explaining the ins and outs of mastery learning. The district is committed to a mastery-learning model in kindergarten through sixth grades. Students at Fairbanks will be taking a step away from technology. At Monday night’s meeting of the Fairbanks Board of Education, the board unanimously voted to have third graders take their state mandated assessments on paper with pencil. Each year the state requires students in certain grades to take tests in a variety of subject areas. The tests are electronic and taken on computer. Districts can, however, opt to take the test using paper and pencil. To do that, the board must pass a resolution formalizing the decision. Ann Connolly, a fifth grade student at Trinity Lutheran School in Marysville, recently competed for an opportunity to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The state bee was held at the Scripps School of Communication at Ohio University in Athens on March 23. Ann was the winner of the Trinity Spelling Bee and qualified online to be one of the state competitors. Ann, one of 51 Ohio students who qualified for the state competition, was knocked out in the second round. She is the daughter of John and Pam Connolly. (Photo submitted)
