By Alexis Murray Fairbanks’ 2018 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) made history as it attended nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 28 to July 3. The eight attendees all placed first or second at states in order to qualify for nationals. The graduated seniors, Kira Jones and Marissa Nicol, were partners who received gold at nationals for “Life Event” planning. For the first since Ben Keller’s first year of teaching, band camp was held at Fairbanks High School. Previously, the camp has been hosted at a college or university within an hour’s drive, but there were many reasons that prompted the change. He is an 18-year-old senior and is staying with the Williams family while he is in America. He says he was inspired to travel to America because of his exposure to American media throughout his childhood, and has developed a new interest in American politics after the 2016 election. September’s senior of the month is Madeline Weisburn. She is the daughter of Joe and Laura Weisburn of Ostrander. She attends St. Joseph Catholic Church in Plain City, where she is a member of the youth group, as well as volunteers and serves as a lector regularly. By Kate White In the first week of September, the English and math teachers at Fairbanks had the opportunity to attend the Rural Teachers Collaboration at the North Union Board of Education office. Teachers in both departments came from rural schools in the nearby area, including Triad, Elgin, Pleasant, Mechanicsburg and North Union, as well as many curriculum administrators. This group of teachers discussed assessments, resources and item analysis for the state tests. They worked in small groups, attended workshops and listened to a lecture, among other activities. The Triad School District is will be experiencing some cost savings thanks to the work and wit of individuals in the maintenance department. This board of education approved the purchase of chillers for the middle and high school through the National Intergovernmental Purchasing Alliance at a state minimum price of $162,430 for the two units. While the price for air-cooled climate control devices is substantial, District treasurer Connie Cohn said Thursday night that the price tag could have been much higher. The district report card was a large focus at Marysville’s School Board meeting Thursday night. Being the first year districts were given an overall grade, board members expressed joy in Marysville earning a “B” rating. Kent State University Several area students were placed on the dean’s and president’s lists for the spring 2018 semester at Kent State University. Those who made it to the dean’s list from Marysville are Logan Carper, Kassidi Davisson, Lauren Hampton and Fallyn Stephen. Johanna Stimmel was named to the president’s list. Kiersten McMahon, of Richwood, was placed on the president’s list.
