A pair of separation agreements were approved at Thursday’s Marysville Board of Education meeting, including one for a teacher who signed a last-chance agreement roughly a year ago. The agreements, stemming from separate incidents, officially ended the employment of 11-year educator Scott Hamilton and bus driver Dan Oxley, who has been employed by the district since 2016. The actions against Hamilton are the result of accusations similar to those discovered when he was removed from the classroom early in the 22-23 school year. If the Marysville School District can’t fix its bussing problems it may soon find itself with three fewer students Matt Cunningham and his family live 12 miles north of Marysville and rely on school transportation. “We have three kids in three different schools starting at the same time,” Cunningham said. “It’s nearly impossible to take the kids to school with two working parents, so we rely on bussing.” Staffing shortages have led some Marysville routes to be habitually late, while some days are punctuated by delays that can be hours long. North Union approved a new superintendent for the school district. At the Monday board of education meeting, school officials voted to approve Justin Ufferman as the new district head replacing Rich Baird, who announced his retirement last month. The Marysville School District is hoping to never again see a day like Aug. 29, 2023. North Union’s superintendent has decided to retire after more than 30 years in education. Rich Baird, who has led the North Union school district for the last eight and a half years, is retiring at the end of December. Triad officials are optimistic about a new school year and their plans to increase test scores among students. During its meeting Thursday, the Board of Education heard a presentation from Elementary School Principal Lee Claypool regarding strategies teachers will use to boost student testing in the 2023-24 school year. Triad administrators are planning to implement new strategies after last year’s state test scores were lower than expected. The Triad Board of Education held a work session Monday to discuss the 2022-23 test scores and plans to improve them during the upcoming year. The discussion focused largely on middle and high school results, as Elementary School Principal Lee Claypool could not attend due to an illness. Triad officials are working to ensure that students’ families are in the loop when it comes to safety precautions. The district will host two open house-style sessions surrounding safety practices on July 31 and Aug. 14.
